- 1 death every 13 mins, 38,000 deaths in America a year
Why do people choose suicide? Hurting?
John 16:33 Jesus said " Here on earth you will have trials and sorrow."
There is pain associated with life and we all handle it differently. Jesus wants the pain to go away, but you may not want to hear Jesus or from Jesus. Pain can do that, but know this - Matt 11:38 Jesus says "Come to me, all who are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Sometimes when we need Jesus, we can't go to Him ourselves, we need friends to carry us. Never walk alone, seek help.
- Talk to a friend
- Talk to a counselor
- Let it out, don't keep the pain inside. Tell someone!
We have to understand that depression most of the time leads to suicidal thoughts. We also have to understand that depression is a disease, and we need to get help with the disease.
What are some warning signs to look for:
- Talk about wanting to die, or killing self
- Talk about feeling hopeless or no purpose
- Talk about feeling trapped
- Withdrawing or feeling isolated
How can you help someone:
- Listen, be there for them
- Do not shrug it off, take it serious
- Ask questions
- Never keep it a secret, report it
- Acknowledge the pain, and work together for help.
There is help, there is encouragement
I John 4:4
This is a serious issue that a lot of times get swept under the rug, We don't like to talk about it, but this is real. It effects a lot of people. We need to be proactive and be willing to help, listen and encourage all people around us. Life does get hard, there are times when we don't want to face the day, but when we feel loved, encouraged, accepted, it makes the day a little better.
Be that someone people can turn to, love people, show Jesus, lets be a light and help those who are hurting. Pray, encourage, and walk the journey. The national suicide hotline is 1-800-273-8255 or you can text HOME to 741-741. - Stan Dutton (Student Pastor)
